“I have always been attracted to the beauty seen and heard in the natural world. I am thrilled by charismatic megafauna - caribou on the tundra or a tolerant grizzly bear. But my most frequent uplifting encounters are with birds. Their songs and colors enhance the natural world. What enlivens a static landscape most, however, is their movement. I have been trying to capture the illusion of movement through sculpture for decades. Although I have chosen calm birds and mammals as subjects, I keep returning to moving birds. My journey as an artist has been led by birds soaring, diving and mastering the air molecules that support them. My journey toward understanding how birds and art enhance the quality of my life continues.”

“Although I started my art journey carving wood, I consider all three dimensional art as sculpture. I looked at the past masters’ bronzes as part of my learning curve. After an artist friend taught me how to cast in bronze I built a furnace that could melt fifty pounds of bronze in my driveway. Using that step to cast wood pieces into bronze sculpture I continued to expand what I could do. As I got to the point of wanting to do multiples, I started using traditional mother molds and having commercial foundries cast some of my work. Whatever techniques and tools that allow me to realize my ideas are fair game.”
